What Is Meter Proving and Why Does It Matter?

Meter proving provides a practical way to evaluate how a flow meter is performing under defined operating conditions. It compares the meter’s indicated volume with a known reference and produces data that can support reliable measurement in custody-transfer and process applications.

Where measured volume affects inventory, product movement or commercial transactions, relatively small measurement differences can become meaningful. Meter proving provides objective information about meter performance and can help identify changes within the measurement system.

What Determines Proving Requirements?

There is no single proving schedule or procedure that applies to every installation. Requirements depend on the equipment, application and obligations governing the measurement system.

Field proving is completed at the installed location, with the meter evaluated as part of the site’s measurement system. It can provide useful performance information under operating conditions without removing the meter from the installation.

Laboratory calibration is completed in a controlled facility using a reference system and defined test points. It may be appropriate for new, serviced or removable meters, or when performance needs to be evaluated across a broader operating range.

These methods serve different purposes and are not automatically interchangeable. The appropriate approach depends on the meter, product, installation, measurement objective and applicable requirements.
